C.L. Crumbliss Bamboo 6’10” 4/5wt 2pc 2.96oz (32-047)

This rod was made from my own taper and is a progressive medium to medium-fast (for bamboo) hex build that is perfect for smaller waters where you want a little heavier rod.  Although I prefer the action with a DT4 a five weight line would work well also.  You can read my bamboo rod making design philosophy on the “Bamboo” page of my site.

This rod features a cigar shaped grip and continuous cork reel seat turned from 1/4″ flor grade cork rings.  The reel seat hardware is a pocketed butt cap and sliding band from RLee in Idaho.  Snake Brand guides and a low profile black stripper are wrapped in yli silk thread.  The rod has size 12 CSE truncated ferrules and the female ferrule has a full overwrap of silk.

This rod will ship (free in the US) in a sewn sleeve in a labeled aluminum tube.  The tube will be securely boxed for safe shipment and fully insured.

This handcrafted bamboo rod is offered for sale for $750.

C.L. Crumbliss Bamboo 7′ 3wt 2pc 2.7oz (32-049)

This rod was made from my own taper and is a semi-parabolic, medium to medium slow taper hex build that is perfect for light line and delicate presentations.  I have built several versions of this rod and enjoy fishing my personal rod in places where a delicate presentation is important as the softer action and fine tip allow great finesse in casting and playing fish.  You can read my bamboo rod making design philosophy on the “Bamboo” page of my site.

This rod features a nearly straight grip (slight swell towards the tip) and continuous cork reel seat turned from 1/2″ flor grade cork rings.

McFarland/Hallowell 6’6″ 4/5wt 3pc (32-040 and 32-041)

I had the opportunity to purchase two of these blanks from Bob Hallowell a few months ago and have finished them out and have decided to offer them for sale.  The blanks are a collaboration that Bob worked on with Mike McFarland who rolled them in Pennsylvania.  I had the opportunity to fish with Bob two years ago and enjoyed hearing the story of how these blanks came into being and I’m fortunate to be able to offer these completed rods.

I’ve test cast both rods with 4 and 5 wt lines and found that I preferred the deeper loading 5wt as I imagine using this rod on tight smaller waters where a 35 foot cast would be considered long.

Both rods are completed with RLee Dual Sliding Band Reel Seats.  040 has a Walnut spacer with complementing brown silk while 041 has a Buckeye Burl spacer with green silk.  Both rods have Snake Brand black nickel guides/tiptop and a low profile black stripper.  I don’t like writing on black blanks so there is nothing inscribed on the rod but each will come with a hang tag stating the rod details and blank origin.

Please note that rod 040 has a cosmetic crease above the grip for a few inches that doesn’t affect the performance but is a cosmetic flaw which is the reason for the lower price. Prices include rod sock, shipping, and paypal fees within the US.  Please contact me for international shipping cost or added cost for a rod tube.

Fenwick Feralite 7’6″ 5wt (32-042)

Fenwick Fiberglass Rods need no introduction so when I had the opportunity to pick up this blank and built it out I didn’t hesitate.  Unfortunately when the blank arrived it wasn’t in as great of condition as I had hoped but I decided to build it anyway.  Structurally and functionally the rod is great but there are spots and scratches that certainly preclude me from saying it’s a NOS blank.  This blank probably rattled around in someone’s garage or workshop for many years before I had the chance to make it a fishing rod.

The rod is finished with a standard Proof Ritz Grip, Proof Uplocking Aluminum Seat, Snake Brand black nickel guides/tiptop, and black low profile stripper.  Prices include rod sock, shipping, and paypal fees within the US.  Please contact me for international shipping cost or added cost for a rod tube.

J. Green NTS 6’3″ 3wt 4pc (30-026)
I built this rod with the intention of keeping it for my trip to Colorado and New Mexico this summer, but everything has a price, so if you must have it I’m happy to sell it and build another.  James Green builds wonderful quality fiberglass blanks and this rod from his Native Trout Series is no exception.  This is a slow action, unsanded, fiberglass blank in a packable configuration this rod will fit inside a 20″ tube which makes it perfect for airline travel and hiking into your favorite small stream.

I build this rod in the same fashion as my Classic Glass builds with  the exception of using 3/8″ cork rings instead of the typical 1/2″.  The reel seat blends right into a Garrison-esque bullet grip.

Spring Green 8’0″ 5wt 3pc

A bright green colored painted glass blank with natural spigot ferrules was the platform for this medium action glass rod.  Although its labeled as a 5wt you would probably be equally happy with a 6wt as it gave the rod a little more feel when I test cast it.  This rod features a Lemke Garrison style down locking seat in clear aluminum with a cork insert and very modestly tapered cork grip.  The Snake Brand Universal guides are wrapped with cinnamon brown nylon finished with a light build epoxy finish.  The spigot ferrules are a bit long but seat well with an appropriate gap spacing. This rod doesn’t include a sock but will be securely wrapped and shipped.

Steffen 8’0″ 5/6wt. 3pc

One of the more popular blank configurations for Mark’s rods, this was one of my earlier builds and doesn’t have any inscription on the butt section.  The rod was built using Snake Brand Universal Guides, an Alps Uplocking Reel Seat, and custom turned full wells grip made from 1/4″ flor grade cork rings.  Finish on the rod is U-40 Permaglass which is incredibly strong and clear but doesn’t level like epoxy or varnish.  The rod has been gently used and shows light soiling on the grip.  Price includes sewn rod sleeve made from a heavy cotton drop cloth material.  No tube is included the rod will be shipped securely in a PVC tube.

Demo/Prototype Rods

The following rods are a collection of builds from different blanks from asian manufacturers.  In developing my new rod series for Fall ’15 I received over 25 blanks and built on what I considered the best.  These rods were built with premium components but due to the varied sizes and to keep cost to a minimum I am not including rod tubes, most rods do include a sewn sleeve/sock for storage and I’ll note in the listing if they do not.

Clear Glass 8’6″ 6wt 4pc

This medium action glass rod has a smooth forgiving action, it loads a little deeper than the Steffen and would be equally at home casting popping bugs for bass as well as streamers for trout.  The rod features a black aluminum uplocking reel seat with fighting butt.  The grip was formed with using flor grade cork.  The REC brand recoil guides are wrapped with olive silk and were finished with epoxy.  This blank being clear does have some dark blemish spots I assume from when it was wrapped on the mandrel (visible as the dark splotch in the middle piece pictured in the fourth photo).  The rod was only test cast once (on the pond, I just had to cast an articulated streamer) and shows as new.

Brown Glass 8’2″ 5wt 4pc

This is my most recent build and I almost overlooked this blank but I’m glad I didn’t as it’s a very nice medium action yet not very tippy given the length.  This rod was built using a black unlocking seat with rosewood insert, Pac-Bay guides wrapped in cinnamon nylon, and a slimmer full wells grip turned from flor cork.  The rod was finished with two coats of low build epoxy.  This rod doesn’t include a sock or tube but will be securely wrapped and shipped.

Orange Glass 6’6″ 2/3wt 3pc

This rod blank is a pleasant burnt orange color and came labeled as a 3 weight but after taping the guides I decided to label it as a 2/3 as my preference was for the 2 wt lines as the 3 wt caused the rod to collapse a bit too much for my taste.  The Lemke pocketed butt cap down locking hardware is combined with an all cork seat and grip that was turned on the blank.  The grip is just over 5″ in length giving this rod a delicate touch.  The Snake Brand guides were wrapped in brown nylon and then finished with low build epoxy.  All of the hardware on this rod is black nickel in color so there is nothing bright to spook the small stream fish this rod will catch.

Red Glass 6’8″ 3wt 4pc

This rod was built on a popular red glass blank that can be readily found in the US for about $50.  I built this rod for a Spring fishing trip to Shennandoah National Park to fish for Brookies.  The rod ended up getting well used for three days and caught plenty of fish including my personal best for the park, a 10″ brookie from the Rapidan River.  The rod features a Lemke pocketed butt cap down locking seat in black nickel, cork insert, and a slim cigar shaped grip.  The Snake Brand guides are also black nickel colored and wrapped in Fuji Poly thread that matches this blank perfectly.  I finished the rod with 5 coats of Permagloss for the trip and then after I returned home added a very thin coat of epoxy to give a more level finish for the new owner.  This rod was fished for three days and the butt cap shows some wear which is pictured.  This rod will come with the pictured factory generic sock.
